Most custom software developers want to work on big, enterprisey apps for giganto-corps. But I'm different. I've seen too many smaller organizations waste thousands of dollars on labor costs that could have been saved with some custom software. I've also seen a lot of businesses make poor decisions because they couldn't get at the information they needed to make the right choices for their business.

Code Poetry Software builds unique applications that can give your business a competitive advantage. The right custom software can save you money and help you provide value to your customers that your competitors can't.

My business is awfully small. Do I need custom software?

Look, not every organization needs custom software, and if I think there is something out there that will meet most of your needs out of the box, you'll hear about it from me.  I'm not interested in wasting your money.

Who are your typical clients?

Most of my clients have approximately 5 to 200 employees, and make $1M to $25M in annual revenue. All of my current clients are in Minnesota.

What kind of programming do you do?

Non-techie answer: I have experience in three areas:

• Windows programming
• Web application programming
• Mobile programming

In addition, I can provide other software-related services, such as design, help file authoring, training, and mentoring.

Techie answer: .NET development, SQL Server 2000/2005/2008, .NET Compact Framework, ASP.NET

So is the blog about your custom software?

Not exactly. Many small businesses don't know much about software development. Apparently they are too busy running their businesses! So I try to demystify the software development processs and make it easier to understand how to work effectively with technical people like programmers.

So the Tips for Working with Programmers blog is to help business people to better understand software development and programmers.  Hopefully it helps answer that age-old question: how do I communicate with the alien known as a programmer?

Your name is really different. Is there a story?

My parents discovered this name in the newspaper. We aren't even sure that we are pronouncing it the same way. (We pronounce it: ah-vah-nel.) My sister has an unusual name too - it is Roila.
