About Code Poetry Software

Avonelle Lovhaug, Programming GalHi! Thanks for stopping by Code Poetry Software. I'm Avonelle, a chick who loves to program. In real-world terms, this means I've been a professional computer geek for awhile now.

What's Code Poetry Software all about?

Custom software can be kind of like buying a car. Sure, you want the built in GPS and the super-quick heating system (especially here in Minnesota) but none of that really matters if the car won't run for more than two years. It's easy to get obsessed with form over function, but at Code Poetry Software, I think that function has to come first.

So what does this attitude actually mean when it comes to hiring me? I specialize in programs that can really change the way you do business. My programs can help you manage your customers, give you that competitive edge you need, or just save you money by automating something that currently eats up tons of time. After all, your employees are smart, and I'm pretty sure they have better things to do than keep track of spreadsheets.

Most custom software developers want to work on big, enterprisey apps for giganto-corps. But I'm different. I've seen too many smaller organizations waste thousands of dollars on labor costs that could have been saved with some custom software. I've also seen a lot of businesses make poor decisions because they couldn't get at the information they needed to make the right choices for their business. I'll give you honest answers, lots of information, and I'll do it all while focusing on the core things you need to meet your business objectives.

Who are your typical clients?

I work best with businesses run by shrewd owners who use custom software as a key component of their successful business strategy. These owners beat the competition by making effective use of technology, either by giving more to their clients OR by cutting costs through automation. My clients are typically lean, scrappy organizations of less than 100 employees. I only work with Minnesota clients so that we can easily interact in person when needed, and my active client list is kept deliberately small so I can give them the attention they need. Many of my clients have been with me for years!

What kind of programming do you do?

Non-techie answer: I have experience in three areas:

  • Web application programming
  • Windows programming
  • Mobile programming

In addition, I can provide other software-related services, such as system design, help file authoring, and training.

Techie answer: ASP.NET development, SQL Server 2016, Javascript

So is the blog about your custom software?

Not exactly. Many small businesses don't know much about software development. Apparently they are too busy running their businesses! So I try to demystify the software development processs and make it easier to understand how to work effectively with technical people like programmers

So the Tips for Working with Programmers blog is to help business people to better understand software development and programmers. Hopefully it helps answer that age-old question: how do I communicate with the alien known as a programmer, and how do I pick the right extraterrestrial for my business?

Your name is really different. Is there a story?

My parents discovered this name in the newspaper. We aren't even sure that we are pronouncing it the same way. (We pronounce it: ah-vah-nel.) My sister has an unusual name too - it is Roila.

What the critics are saying...

Avonelle is an incredibly talented software developer. She works fast, is economical, and offers great insights into the project at hand. She is also not afraid to speak up when she has concerns about a decision or approach. We’ve utilized her talents on many of our software development projects over the years.
